Wisconsin teenager cited for OWI, vehicle totaled after hitting multiple trees, igniting

BRIDGEPORT, Wis. (WFRV) – A teenager from western Wisconsin was cited for OWI after crashing into a wooded area off of US 18 and escaping the SUV before it ignited.

According to the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were notified of a vehicle that was on fire along US 18 in the Town of Bridgeport around 1:25 p.m. on Monday, December 23.

After an investigation, deputies determined that the SUV, reportedly being driven by a 17-year-old from La Crosse, was eastbound when they traveled off the left shoulder of the four-lane highway.

Deputies say the SUV then went across a snow-covered ‘grassy area’ before it crashed into a heavily wooded area, hitting multiple trees.

The release notes that the teenager was able to get out of the vehicle before it became fully engulfed in flames, totaling the vehicle. They were taken to a local hospital but only suffered minor injuries.

The 17-year-old was reportedly cited for Operating a Motor Vehicle while Under the Influence of a Restricted Controlled Substance and Failure to Keep a Vehicle Under Control.
