MINNEAPOLIS — Target will be expanding its footprint across the country by opening 33 new stores across 16 states over the next few years, according to a spokesperson from the company.

The new locations, which were announced on the website in 2024, are opening in existing and new markets. Target will be opening two new locations in the Phoenix metro area, in Surprise, Ariz., and Queen Creek.

12 of these new locations will be in Florida and Texas alone. The store sizes will range from approximately 30,000 to 150,000 square feet in size, depending on the specific location. The new location in Miami, Beach, Florida will be the smallest at 30,000 square feet.

The company will be entering into new markets with locations in Frankfort, Kent. and Brookings, South Dakota. No new locations have been confirmed for Illinois at this time, which currently has 102 locations.

As of January 27, there are currently 1,978 locations in the United States, operating in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. California has the most stores of any state with 316 locations. With these new stores, Target will surpass 2,000 stores in operation.

The company opened its first store in Roseville, Minn. In 1962 and is currently headquartered in Minneapolis. The company expanded nationwide in the 1980s and 1990s, acquiring many regional department store chains. In 1999, Target began a licensing agreement with Starbucks to open smaller-scale coffee shops within their stores. The agreement is still in place today.

Target had a brief presence in Canada from 2011 until 2015 when the company closed all of its stores in the country due to a variety of reasons such as limited product selections compared to American stores and an overly aggressive expansion style. During the time it was present in Canada, Target lost approximately $2.1 billion in revenue.
