The Shasta County Coroner’s office announced the name of a Redding man who died after a vehicle hit him on Canby Road in early December, Redding police said.

He was 33-year-old Joshua Robert Berry of Redding, the coroner’s office reported on Tuesday.

Berry was walking on the shoulder of Canby Road before 11:30 p.m. Dec. 9, 2024, according to Sgt. Brian Moore with the police department’s traffic unit. A vehicle traveling north struck him near the Pineland Drive intersection, east of Churn Creek Road.

A witness told police the driver “initially stopped” after they struck Berry but then left the crash site, Moore said in the police report.

First responders said the pedestrian had serious injuries. They took him to Mercy Medical Center for care, but he died of his injuries the morning of Dec. 10, according to Moore and the coroner’s report.

The sheriff’s office withheld Berry’s name while they contacted his next of kin.

Also on Dec. 10, police said they arrested the driver of the vehicle and identified her as Tabitha Wilkins, 25, of Redding. Wilkins was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, Moore said.

Officers booked Wilson into the Shasta County Jail on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, committing a hit-and-run that killed a person, and causing bodily injury while driving under the influence, according to Shasta County custody records.

Bail is set at $250,000, according to the county jail.

Officers asked that anyone with information about the case call Redding Police Department at 530-225-4200.
