Man with series of auto theft convictions caught driving stolen car to probation meeting

DENVER (KDVR) — Sometimes old habits die hard.

On Thursday, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office shared a unique story about one thief who hasn’t quite learned his lesson even after several convictions.

The sheriff’s office said a man with three prior stolen car convictions casually walked into the Jeffco Courthouse to meet with his probation officer for his latest guilty plea of motor vehicle theft.

But when deputies checked the security cameras in the courthouse’s parking lot, they noticed something was off.

According to the sheriff’s office, the man allegedly drove another stolen car to get to his probation hearing.

The sheriff’s office said deputies met up with the man once he got out of an elevator and placed him in handcuffs. Deputies said the man tried to deny any wrongdoing, but ultimately admitted that he borrowed the car from a “friend.”

One deputy can be heard on body camera footage telling the man that he “shouldn’t trust” his friends anymore.

“He may have arrived in the stolen car…. but he left in one of ours,” said the sheriff’s office on X.
