Colorado pro team needs new name after giving 'Summit' to Denver's NWSL team

DENVER (KDVR) — Denver is getting its own National Women’s Soccer League team, and on Tuesday the team announced its official name: Denver Summit FC.

But the “Summit” name is not unique to soccer in Colorado professional sports. The state’s Professional Ultimate Frisbee team, the Colorado Summit, said it handed off its name for the soccer team.

“The partnership represents a rare and refreshing show of sportsmanship in the Colorado sports world—where a team from the fast-growing sport of ultimate frisbee is enthusiastically supporting the rise of Denver’s new professional women’s soccer team—the globe’s most popular sport,” the ultimate frisbee team said in a press release.

The NWSL team had previously asked for the public’s help in choosing a name, and options were narrowed down to Denver Peak FC, Colorado 14ers FC, Colorado Summit FC, Denver Elevate FC, Denver FC and Denver Gold FC.

Denver Summit FC President Jen Millet, in a press release Tuesday, said that it “was vital for us to name our club in collaboration with our community,” and added that the crest, colors and brand represent Denver and all of Colorado.

“It embraces our aspirational goals and pioneering spirit to build the best soccer club in the world,” Millet wrote.

Now that the soccer club has its official name, the state’s professional ultimate frisbee team is ready for something new. The team launched a contest asking Coloradans to help find a new name for the team, and everyone is invited to vote or submit ideas for the team’s new identity on the Colorado Summit website.

“This is what Colorado sports is all about—collaboration, creativity, and community,” Gov. Jared Polis said. “Help me welcome the Denver Summit FC and launch a new era of ultimate frisbee in Colorado.”

Anyone can submit their ideas on the team’s Google form, which also lists names to vote from, including:

  • Colorado Element
  • Colorado Hail
  • Colorado Blades
  • Colorado Alpine
  • Colorado Sky
  • Colorado Embers
  • Colorado Talons
  • Colorado Echo
  • Colorado Peaks
  • Colorado Mint

Before their new beginning, the team is hoping to bring home the UFA Championship under the Colorado Summit name. The team starts their bout in the playoffs on Saturday in Oakland, and there will be an official watch party in Denver at 6:30 p.m. at the Crimson & Gold Tavern.

Finalist name ideas will be chosen in the coming weeks and the new name will be revealed in fall before the 2026 season.
