Off the Beaten Path: Duncan's Dairy Bar

BRUNSWICK, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Duncan’s Dairy Bar has been a staple in the community for more than 85 years. The family-run business opened as an ice cream parlor in 1939 and over time expanded to a full-service diner.

On average, they go through 1,000 pounds of potato and 200 pounds of butter a week. John Squadrito started washing dishes at Duncan’s Dairy Bar and by 13, he was asking to help with the baking. His grandmother taught him her recipes and they are the same ones they still use today.

From bread to cinnamon buns, they make everything from scratch. Squadrito said “nothing comes from a box or a can.”

Their giant glazed donuts have a fan following. Pro-tip, order it grilled with a touch of butter.

Over the years, they’ve grown a loyal customer base. Last July, they were added to the state’s Historic Business Preservation Registry at the age of 85.

Duncan’s Dairy Bar is located at 890 Hoosick Road in Troy. They opened for the season on Thursday, Feb. 20. It is open seven days a week. Here are their hours:

  • Monday – Saturday: 4 a.m.- 2 p.m.
  • Sunday: 4 a.m.- 1 p.m.
