ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — While Saturday was dry and mostly sunny, a storm system will bring a mix of wintry precipitation to Southwest and Central Virginia Sunday afternoon into Monday.
Cold and mostly clear conditions are slated for Saturday night. Overnight temperatures will tumble into the frigid lower 20s and teens.

Cloud cover will increase on Sunday as a storm system approaches from the west. A wintry mix of snow and rain will spread eastward during the afternoon and evening. Freezing rain and sleet will begin to mix in late in the day. Highs will be in the 30s and lower 40s. Periods of mixed precipitation will persist into Monday.

Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are in place across Southwest and Central Virginia. Accumulating snowfall and ice are anticipated. Travel impacts are likely late Sunday into Monday. Significant icing could lead to power outages and tree damage.

Up to three inches of snowfall is possible along and south of U.S. 460. Overall, snowfall totals will be lower near the North Carolina/Virginia line. Snowfall amounts increase along/north of I-64 with the highest totals anticipated in Pocahontas and Highland counties.

Up to 0.25″ of ice may accumulate across the region with locally higher amounts possible.
A layer of warm air aloft will result in changing precipitation types. Regardless of the amount of snow and/or ice we receive, this will be a messy winter storm. Please use caution when traveling late Sunday and Monday.
Most of the precipitation will taper off by the early evening hours on Monday, although mountain snow showers will linger to the west. Those snow showers will gradually end overnight as the storm system exits toward the east. Lows will be in the 20s and teens.
Increasing sunshine is expected for Tuesday, but it will be colder and gusty. Wind gusts up to 30 mph are possible. Afternoon highs will be in the near to below-freezing 20s and lower 30s.
