Whitefish Bay sinkhole; driver ignores road closure sign, roadway collapses

WHITEFISH BAY, Wis.A vehicle fell into a sinkhole in Whitefish Bay on Wednesday, Dec. 25. Police say the road was closed at the time of the incident.

According to police, shortly before 11 a.m. there was a water main break near Consaul Place and Lake View Avenue. DPW crews put up “road closed” signs while they resolved the issue because the road was unstable.

Police say a motorist drove around road closure signs and the weight of the vehicle caused the roadway to partially collapse.

The front passenger tire got stuck in the hole. The hole continued to expand, and the vehicle settled more into the hole.

The vehicle was winched out by a tow company.
